60KMPH, 2017

The 60kmph portraits series was devised in late 2017 during an artist residency at the Chengdu Academy of Fine Arts in China. This body of work captures the mass use of the motorcycle or motor scooter as the most popular mode of transport for members of the local public. As a young emerging artist arriving from Sydney; a city which sees minimal bike use, my time spent travelling through the provinces of Sichuan was particularly enthralling when surrounded by motorcyclists who each had their own particular style and point of use.
Over a two week period, the photographs were captured from a moving bus travelling alongside the bikes at around 60km/h. The selected photographs and the definitive elements of each rider's apparel, model of bike, and accessories, allude not only to the lifestyle of the rider, but allow us as a viewer to imagine their recent departure point and upcoming destination.
